Why Peanuts Are a Smart Snack

A Family Peanut Tradition Since 1944

Hancock Peanut Company isn’t a brand that appeared overnight. The Hancock story began in 1944, when Robert Lafayette Hancock Jr. founded Hancock Peanut Company after a lifetime of working with wood, machinery and the peanut industry.

Before founding Hancock Peanut Company, Robert worked as a pattern maker at Benthall Machine Company in Suffolk, Virginia, where he developed expertise making machine parts used in peanut pickers. His skills eventually led to an unusual piece of peanut history: Planters approached Robert to create a wooden statue based on the now-famous Mr. Peanut drawing. His work became the basis for the cast used to create the iron Mr. Peanut statues displayed at Planters facilities.

Robert’s innovative spirit continued with the development of the Hancock Seed Peanut Sheller, an invention that became another important part of his legacy in the peanut industry. In 1944, at age 54, Robert founded Hancock Peanut Company. More than 80 years later, that family history is still part of who we are.

Hancock peanuts are extra-large Virginia-type peanuts selected from the top 1% of the crop, sourced from Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
